As of the 31st of July, the nation had a total of 9,113 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations that were operational, along with 15,493 EV chargers, according to the Minister of Heavy Industries Mahendra Nath Pandey.
As of the 31st of July in 2023, the data that was released by the government indicated that Maharashtra led the nation with the most number of electric vehicle charging stations (2,494).
According to information presented to Parliament, India's top nine cities, each of which has a population of more than 4 million people, will require 18,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by the year 2030.
Responding to a question on EV charging stations, Minister of Heavy Industries Mahendra Nath Pandey told the Lok Sabha, “As per inputs received from the Ministry of Power, preliminary studies conducted for the nine cities, which include Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, all with a population of over 4 million, indicate a requirement of 18,000 public EV charging stations by 2030.”
The minister stated that according to the data that was available with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), as of the 31st of July in 2023, there were a total of 9,113 public EV charging stations that were operational across the nation, along with 15,493 EV chargers.
"As of the 31st of July, 2023, the VAHAN portal, which is controlled by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), reports that there are 28,17,554 electric vehicles now in use across the country… The minister went on to say that this results in a ratio of 182 electric vehicles (EVs) to public EV chargers across the country.
According to the information that was provided by the government as of the 31st of July, the state of Maharashtra topped the nation with the biggest number of electric vehicle charging stations (2,494), followed by the city of Delhi (1,627) and the state of Karnataka (753).
According to Pandey, even though there are no predetermined goals for the installation of public electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the country, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is now in the process of deploying 22,000 public EV charging stations, all of which are scheduled to be installed by the end of the year 2024.
